Advocacy Unlimited celebrates 43rd graduation
honoring the 2010 Torrington Class
Another successful AU graduation was held Friday, December 3, 2010, honoring the graduating students of the 2010 Torrington class. This class, led by AU Course Instructor Jennifer Bucci, was a very cohesive and energetic group anxious to begin their journeys as AU Advocates. Their teamwork and compassion was more than evident in the individual speeches each of them presented at this commencement ceremony.
A large group of friends, family, guests, AU staff, and fellow AU and RU graduates were present to honor and support the newest group of AU Graduates.
Torrington Probate Judge Michael Magistrali, as this graduation's Keynote speaker, gave a very significant, appropriate, and well received message on the parallels of his responsibilities as probate judge and the mission of AU and its graduates, specifically to ensure that people with psychiatric disabilities are allowed the same rights, opportunities, and expectations for a meaningful and personally satisfying life shared by all members of society. DMHAS Commissioner Patricia Rehmer, MSN, congratulated and commended the graduates, recognizing their dedication and hard work in successfully completing the Advocacy Education Course, and the significance of their ongoing role as advocates for others in recovery.
AU Executive Director Dr. Karen Kangas and class instructor Jennifer Bucci presented each student with their well earned Graduation Certificates. Dr. Kangas and Commissioner Rehmer provided closing remarks.
62 AU courses and 45 graduations have been held throughout Connecticut since AU was founded. Eight of the courses have been offered in Spanish. More than 460 persons in recovery from psychiatric disabilities or co-occurring disorders have now graduated and become AU Advocates. More than 40 young adults have graduated from AU's Young Adult "Super Advocate" Program.
