Young Adult “Super Advocate” Graduation

Congratulations to the young adults graduating from AU's third "Super Advocate" class. To recognize and honor these courageous and outstanding individuals, an extremely successful commencement ceremony was held Friday, June 25, 2010 at Greater Bridgeport Community Mental Health Center.

Many friends, family, guests, and fellow advocates attended this festively decorated and enthusiastic ceremony honoring the graduating students of AU's third Young Adult "Super Advocate" course offering. Many thanks to the Greater Bridgeport Community Mental Health Center for so graciously hosting this ceremony and providing decorations, food, gifts to the graduates, and flowers!

Doreen Del Bianco, DMHAS Legislative Program Manager, provided the keynote address. Guest speakers included Elizabeth Buckland, Super Advocate Graduate, and Zulika Oliver-Maloney from Greater Bridgeport Community Mental Health Center. AU Executive Director Dr. Karen Kangas and AU Young Adult Program Director Lyne Stokes, M.Ed., provided welcoming and opening remarks and also led the graduation presentation. Each of the graduating students received Certificates of Graduation.

In addition, there was a special showing of "There is a Future," a video created and produced by the graduates about their experiences in recovery.

GBMHC provided a wonderful meal for all in attendance following the commencement ceremony.

AU's Young Adult Super Advocate Program was developed by Lyne Stokes, M.Ed., Young Adult Program Director.


57 Advocacy Education Courses plus three Young Adult "Super Advocate" Classes have been held throughout Connecticut since AU was founded. More than 430 students have now graduated and become AU Advocates, 61 from AU's six Hispanic courses.
