Tips for Successful Advocacy

Body Language = Success
Body language/physical appearance accounts for most of the overall impression you make on others. Why not take full advantage of this? Your body language is something you can control and change. The following suggestions can help you present yourself as the successful person you are:

"Walk with a sense of energy and purpose. Stand with your head lifted and your shoulders back.

"Sit up and forward at meetings. Keep your hands on the table, this gives the impression that you are listening and involved in the meeting.

"Look good. This does not mean purchasing an entirely new wardrobe. Dress neatly and conservatively; pay attention to the details of your appearance.

"Make eye contact. Doing this helps you to connect with others on a one to one basis. Maintain this eye contact when speaking as well as when listening to others.

"Watch the people you admire, do not try to become them, but do feel free to take from them the moves they embody when interacting with others. Always be on the look out for commanding body language and try it on to see if it suits your style.

"Always remember that you are a success. Your thoughts play a major role in your body language. Positive thinking results in positive body language and this leads to being perceived in a positive way by others.

Advocacy is about supporting a cause. Whether that cause has to do with an individual's particular issue or something that affects others as well, the processes involved share a lot in common. You might say that individual and systems advocacy are two branches of the same tree. Systems advocacy, involves seeking support, commitment and recognition from decision-makers and the general public about a cause or issue. It is the pursuit of influencing outcomes and achieving particular results which will positively impact a population of individuals.
