Advocacy Unlimited Newsletter - August/September 2006

Letters to the Editor

FROM THE EDITOR...

Dear Friends,

Thank you for sending your email's and letters regarding the AU newsletter publication. I am proud to be a part of such a phenomenal movement! We currently wrapped up the New Britain advocacy classes and I'm happy to announce that we have nine AU newbie's! I look forward to expanding on the topics of the newsletter. Posting your input, publishing articles that touch on the nerve of the topic. Whether it's on the death penalty, suicide by cop, housing discrimination, Andrea Yates, or the Judge Rotenberg Education Center. I promise 'no fluff' here! There are many topics that I am extremely passionate about, some which I've learned about recently, and others that have changed my way of thinking, such as, diversity, multiculturalism, people first language, laws and legislation. I hope to have many more opportunities to share these with you. Enjoy the Message from the Executive Director, "White shoes...a must for all after Labor Day!" by Susan Kramms (I'm a shoe aficionado), and the article on the "shocking" truth about the Judge Rotenberg Center.

In the meantime, have a safe and happy summer!

Extraordinary Life by Anne M. Hamilton

Your article about Rene Miserez (article opens in a new browser window), a man who had a serious mental illness for years, touched me. I was overwhelmed by his compassion and willingness to help others who had similar problems. I was awed by the courage he displayed as he overcame many obstacles. He not only worked when he could, but he fought for his right to go back to work when he lost his job. As a person with a mental illness, I know how difficult it is to "bounce" back when you lose a job. It is hard enough to do this when you have family support, but much more difficult when you are unable to recognize and utilize the family support you have. This story gives hope and is a source of inspiration to all of us who have a mental illness.
