Message from the Executive Director

Greetings!
I hope that the New Year has treated you well. The past two months since the holidays are practically a blur. In January, we submitted a Technology/Latino Initiative grant to SAMHSA. Thanks to all of the AU advocates who volunteered to be on the Project Advisory Committee and thanks to those of you who gave us your input during the Bimonthly Meeting. Special thanks to Norm Kidwell of AU and consultant Chris Palames and the rest of the AU staff who made the grant application possible.

February brought the first snow of the season and a blizzard of legislative hearings. Many thanks to all of the advocates who served on the legislative task force, testified at hearings, wrote testimony or simply were a presence during the hearings. As always, your input made a great impact on legislators. We won't know the complete outcome of our efforts until the end of session in June, but I am hopeful that things will turn out well. For a summary of our legislative activities, see page 3.

Thanks to those of you that submitted articles. We couldn't print them all but hope to publish more in the months to come. In this issue, you will see the first article written by an individual who lives in Whiting Maximum Security (thanks Guy Levine), commentary and more. Keep writing!

Hope to see you at the Bimonthly meeting! It will be on Saturday, April 21, 2007 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm in Page Hall Solarium at CVH. We are still working on securing a wheelchair accessible (free) location in the Norwich area for the May meeting. Give us a call if you have ideas.

Stay warm and think Spring!

Melissa Marshall
